Makes You Go Hmm

Anyone else wonder why school districts in Nebraska are getting downer-cattle beef from a meat packer in California?

Surely we have downer cattle right here in our own great state...

On a Cold Nebraska Night

As we looked out the frost-encrusted window at a night so glittering cold that it seemed the warmth was drawn out through our very eyes, Barbara said to me, ...But the Farmer's Almanac said this winter was supposed to be mild and warm.

It's not winter yet, I replied.

Monday evening, on the home from work, I experienced the closest thing to white-out conditions I've seen since moving to Nebraska. Come to think of it, since I lived in west Texas before Nebraska and South Carolina before that, it might have been the worst winter weather I've ever driven in. The wind would gust, picking up the cold, light snow from the ground in whirling clouds and drive it across the landscape in blinding waves. It was stunningly beautiful, and the experience was enhanced by the buffeting of the car.

With Thanksgiving, it seems, winter has come as if someone threw a switch.
